After a quick jaunt to Paris, next up will be Skomaker Dagestad in Oslo, Norway for a cold weekend in Scandinavia. Skomaker Dagestad recently received some SMU's tailor made for the bitterly cold Norwegian winters. Shearling lined boots and slippers, available exclusively at his prestigious brick and mortar store in the heart of Oslo.

Next week brings us to Bread & Butter in Berlin for four days at one of the biggest market weeks in the world. Then It's quickly back to New York for Capsule Show where we'll be showing our new and extensive Fall 2014 collection.

Look for more updates and pictures in the coming days.

There is nothing we love more than beautiful leather, that is why we search the world for the best leather that we can find. Shell Cordovan and Chromexcel from Horween in Chicago, Bison from the American Southwest, Repello suede from England, Box calf from France, and mimosa calf from Italy. All of our decisions are about making the best and most interesting shoes we possible can. We hope you enjoy.

Rancourt for Brooks Brothers waxed cotton boat shoes

This is a special project a long time in the making. We’ve spent the past year developing a boat shoe that is made from British Millerain waxed cotton (the same used in Barbour jackets) and Horween chromexcel. The shoes are fully lined in leather and have an exceptional deck sole, not your run of the mill boat shoe. The waxed cotton will age beautifully and makes these shoes almost waterproof. These will be available exclusively at Brooks Brothers for Spring 2014

Removing innersole from Blake Boots

This is a well worn (2+ years) Blake boot, one of our early models. The uppers are an SB Foot leather, fully lined, with a leather midsole and plantation crepe wedge sole. I wanted to show how safely and easily the innersoles can be removed if need be. To be 100% clear, we do not typically have to remove and/or replace the innersoles when a Blake shoe or boot is be re-soled. However, after multiple re-solings it may be best to replace the innersole if it is compromised by all of the stitch holes. I also wanted to demonstrate how the fiberboard innersoles we use do mold to your feet and even after two years of heavy use are still in great shape and do not need to be replacedIMG_1375

IMG_1380

IMG_1384

The boots have been "re-lasted" meaning the original last has been inserted back into the boots.

IMG_1392

At this point we are ready to remove the sole unit. He inserts a thin and sharp knive between the uppers and the midsole and carefully cuts all of the threads attaching the midsole to the innersole.

IMG_1404

After the sole unit is removed we are ready to carefully peel the upper away from the innersole.

IMG_1409

He begins by gently wedging a blunt metal tool in between the upper and innersole and carefully pulling the uppers away from the innersole. The tool has no sharp edges so as not to cut or damage the uppers.

IMG_1412

When the uppers are separated from the innersole the upper can be safely removed.

IMG_1416

All pieces are undamaged, theoretically we could use this innersole again, but we will not. It was only removed for the purpose of this demonstration. The sole unit will be trashed and a new one installed. You can start to see how the innersole has molded to the wearer's feet.

IMG_1421

A very well worn innersole but still completely intact.

IMG_1423

A side view to better show how the innersole has molded to the foot. IMPORTANT NOTE: this is an early model and at the time we were not wrapping the innersole in leather. We now take the extra step of wrapping the innersole in leather lining so the lining will not pull away from the innersole.

IMG_1424

I will try to post pics of the new innersole being installed as well as pics of the re-soling process and the finished boots.

The Six Families Keeping American Style Alive

One of our mottos is, and always has been, "Uniquely American". It is something that we believe in, strive for, and hope to embody for a long time to come. Essentially, the meaning of this mantra is that by handcrafting shoes here in Maine and adhering to the traditions and principles of those that came before us, my grandfather included, we create footwear that embodies American ingenuity, ethic, and aesthetic. There is no one in the world creating genuine handsewn shoes the way we do here in Maine - this makes our shoes not only uniquely American but also unique to Maine.

It is with great pleasure that I am able to share that we were included in this recent Men's Journal spotlight on six American family-owned companies that are keeping traditions like ours alive in the United States.

Spring 2014 Lookbook

Welcome to our Spring 2014 lookbook. Check out our first style suggestions for warm weather 2014. We've included some looks to get you through the cooler days of spring and great wardrobe suggestions for spring and summer weddings. Spring and summer footwear is all about ease and comfort. We love loafers because we can slip them on and off, with or without socks. A great loafer should be lightweight and flexible. Our Venetian loafer in taupe suede embodies all of these characteristics while also being the most versatile color in your footwear arsenal.

The beefroll penny loafer is our favorite year-round loafer and can pair with just about anything. The unlined Chromexcel is great for sockless wear in the spring and summer.

The ranger-moc and Read Boat Shoe are new additions to our casual handsewn collection. Both are unlined and will look great down at the yacht club or in the city with chinos or selvedge denim.

Waxed Cotton Boat Shoes

We created these waxed cotton boat shoes out of a desire to craft a highly water resistant, durable, and unique American boat shoe. They are fully lined with Horween's casco leather and trimmed in Carolina Brown Chromexcel also from Horween. We have used an exclusive wedge boat sole that is more sturdy and comfortable than your typical rubber boat sole. There is a leather midsole and leather wedge heel that the rubber deck sole is attached to. The benefit is more support for your feet. Available Exclusively at Brooks Brothers.

What it means to be Genuine Hand Sewn

At Rancourt & Co. all of our hand sewn moccasin shoes are "Genuine Handsewns". What this means to us is there is no "pre-punching" of the holes that connect the main pieces of the shoe. What this means for you is a better fitting and better looking pair of shoes. The skilled craftspeople who make your shoes have more leeway to shape the leather to the last. This technique is practiced by the select few who truly believe in the skills of their shoemakers.Rancourt_HighRes-12_1Rancourt_HighRes-13Rancourt_HighRes-11_2
